How to become a successful writer

I always fancied being a writer but had no idea where to start.  I tried a correspondence course in 1994, spent £500, received all these lovely books and then tried to write a novel.  Now that novel never did get very far, work became busy and I bought a new house that needed complete renovation, and then I had my daughter in 1996, so the novel went into hibernation, I’d often think about it with fond memories hoping to see it again one day.
